“It’s kind of a bit of a weird one,” the comedian said of the lack of women in his cast.
“The show’s not about gender, it’s about people being human.”
And while the show has had some strong female performers on its roster—including Tina Fey and Amy Poehler—the show has often focused more on its men, including Jimmy Fallon.
“He’s a man,” Fallon told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015.
“I don’t know if I’m the only guy on this show that doesn’t think so.
We all have our own thing, but I do think that he’s a really great actor.”
While there are a handful of male actors in the cast, the host has a number of women on the show, including Amy Poehlman, Sarah Paulson, Sarah Hyland, Amy Poe, Jessica Biel, Olivia Munn, Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Adam Driver, and John Cena.
He said the show’s focus on its male cast is intentional.
“I think when you’re doing a show like this, you have to have a certain kind of masculinity that’s going to come across on your screen,” Fallon said.
“And sometimes, there’s a guy that doesn’ want to be there.
It’s kind the opposite, in a sense, of ‘Saturday Night Live.'”
He added that he doesn’t feel like the show needs to change to make it more diverse, though.
“We don’t need to do any changes to our show,” he said.
“There are enough of these shows out there where people are going to be saying, ‘Oh, it just doesn’t work that way,'” he added.
“But the thing that really bugs me is that the fact that women are not included in these shows, and women are really struggling to make ends meet.
I feel like we’ve been trying to push that envelope, and there’s still so much that women don’t get.
I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for us to push the envelope.”
Fallon also took a shot at the industry, telling Entertainment Weekly that he does not see the need for more female directors.
“You don’t want a lot of women to be directors, you don’t see a lot women directors, so I don’t think we need to make more,” he added at the time.
“We have to be smart about what we’re doing.”
For now, the comedian’s thoughts are still focused on his current work on the Tonight Show.
“Tonight Show” premieres its first season on Sept. 27 on NBC, and he has plans to return for the series’ final season, which he describes as a “big one.”
“I’ve been really enjoying it,” Fallon explained to THR.
“It has been really good and fun.
I’ve learned a lot about comedy.
It was really fun.
There’s so much to do, and it’s really exciting for me to be able to be back on the screen.”
